Photoplethysmography

Photoplethysmography is used in pulse oximeters to measure blood oxygen concentration. A pair of small LEDs face a light collector through a fingertip. One LED is red and the other is infrared. Absorption of light at these wavelengths differs significantly between blood loaded with oxygen and blood lacking oxygen. Thus the device is able to estimate the patient’s blood oxygen content.
