A condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure. Hypertension is defined by the European Society of Cardiology and the European Society of Hypertension (ESC/ESH Arterial Hypertension Guidelines 2018) as office systolic blood pressure values ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure values ≥90 mmHg, based on repeated office blood pressure measurements on more than one visit.
