Pericardial effusion

An abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity. In most cases pericarditis is the cause of the effusion. Other causes are cancer, injury to the sac or heart from a medical procedure, myocardial infraction, severe kidney failure (uremia), autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and others) and bacterial infections (tuberculosis).
